Understand it could be time-consuming to organize events, maybe some small gatherings set on certain dates and at certain places can be posted on homepage, so that whoever interested can go when their schedule allows.

Agree that it's a great idea, but the difficulty is that people don't tend to check back into the site regularly unless there's an event.
One future option would be to create a OCN opt-in mailing list for Overseas Chinese-related events; in the interim we would be glad to broadcast relevant events to the OCN community as long as they are of a non-commercial nature.
